What a year it has been for everyone…2020 is definitely one for the books. With that being said, we need our FAITH now more than ever. Although the REP will look a bit different this year, your child’s religious education and safety remains our top priority.
We are following a hybrid education model, which includes both remote and in person learning. One grade will be meeting in the Church each week. This allows for each grade to meet approximately every four weeks in person with their Catechist. Meeting days will continue to be on Wednesdays from 3:30 – 5:00 PM for Grades 1 - 5 and 7:00 – 8:30 for Grades 6 -8. I have secured wireless capability in the church allowing us to use video and other online resources during the in person lessons.
During in-person meetings in the Church, students will have assigned seating and will be “socially distanced”. Students are required to wear masks as they do in school and temperatures will be taken upon entrance. No books, backpacks, pencils, pens etc. will be allowed in the Church. They will not need anything during those lessons and textbooks will remain at home. By keeping the in-person meetings very small, the risk of COVID transmission is lowered and contacts can be easily traced. The Church will be cleaned prior to and after meeting. REP will follow all CDC, state and local guidelines for COVID-19 prevention.
The majority of work will be done remotely with assignments. We will use the newest version of Loyola Press and books will remain home. I have personally written a lesson plan for each week that includes videos and additional resources to make this learning model as engaging as possible. The ICC website has class pages for each grade. The schedule for your child’s class will be found there as will links for their assignment’s each week. They will email their assignments to the gmail address assigned for each grade. Some assignments will be written and some may require sending pictures, especially for the younger grades.
Although the hybrid model may put more of a burden on parents, especially for the younger grades. I did my best to write lesson plans to make it easier and more cohesive for both the children and parents. It may even be a good opportunity for parents to brush up on their faith knowledge or learn something new. Older children may be able to help younger ones and this may turn out to be a real resurgence (or test) of FAITH for our families. As parents, we are the primary educators of our children. Everything we do and say is absorbed into their developing minds. I know this firsthand from raising daughters who often remind me of things that I did wrong and sometimes right! WE CAN ONLY DO OUR BEST! This is a great opportunity to be more involved in raising children with a strong Catholic FAITH and good moral compass.
